Split Hits: The Forever Underrated!

Often songs released late in the year, particularly in November and December, have their sales split between two years and their yearly chart ranking does not reflect the true popularity and sales power of the songs. It can be difficult to put things into perspective so I made this list to show some examples of songs that were bigger hits than people might think because they were released too late during the year to have their popularity reflected on year end charts or just had some crazy longevity.

This list is not exhaustive, it is merely supposed to be a representative sample of a trend. Also important to keep in mind is that many of these songs had longer than a typical year to chart so cumulative sales represent a longer charting period than other songs had available. This can skew things in favour of the split hits somewhat, so do keep that in mind.

IU's Good Day
2011: 2,286,342
2010: 1,062,578
Total: 3,348,920
Position if all sales were in 2010: #2

IU's You & I
2011: 2,934,107
2012: 2,267,397
Total: 5,201,504
Position if all sales were in 2011: #1 (by over 1 million downloads)

IU's Friday
2013: 434,974
2014: 885,132 (still charting)
Total: 1,320,106
Position if all sales were in 2013: #14

IU's hits should have been #1 yearly songs but she often promotes at the end of the year making the nearly impossible. Her longevity and public recognition is no joke; Good Day and You & I reappear on the chart every time she has a comeback.

A great showing considering their non-idol status.

Keeping in perspective that this is great for an idol male soloist!

2012: 936,882
Total: 3,919,684
Position if all sales were in 2011: #2

Troublemaker's Troublemaker
2011: 2,134,987
2012: 2,273,800

T-ara is another group that has had several promotions that straddle two years, recently however, their sales have fallen to the point that it no longer makes as big a difference.

SNSD's The Boys

There are many other songs known to be splits but GAON did not provide weekly and monthly numbers until well into 2011. The following are known to be split hits but the exact numbers are unknown because of lack of numbers one year or another.

AfterSchool's Because of You

Park Bom You & I
2010: 996,381

(reported sales of 4,483,364 by the end of 2011)

Sistar's How Dare You

*if a song did not chart on the yearly GAON charts 2 consecutive years, totals came from monthly charts not weekly.

If you know if any others, post their rankings and sales in the comments!
