Current Drama Popularity (Request)

A couple of people have asked me to look up dramas currently airing and rank them by ratings. If people find this useful I can continue to do it, just so people have a place to easily see what dramas are popular.

Monday & Tuesday Dramas (10 pm):
#1 Horse Doctor:  20% - 22.9% (MBC) - started out with 8.7% - 10.7 % (ep. 33/50 rated)
#2 School 2013: 15.3% - 17.3% (KBS) - started out with 8% - 10% (ep. 15/16 rated)
#3 King of Ambition: 9.7% - 10.6% (SBS) - started out with 9.8% (ep. 4/24 rated) *runs at 9 pm

Currently Horse Doctor is 2nd or 3rd in its time slot, School 2013 is 4th and King of Ambition is 16th approximately.

Wednesday & Thursday Dramas (10pm):
#1 7th Grade Civil Servant: 14% - 15.9% (MBC) - started with 12.7% - 15.6% (2/20)
#2 Jeon Woo-Chi: 13% - 14.9% (KBS) - started with 14.1% - 15.1% (20/24)
#3 The Great Seer: 9% - 12.6% (SBS) - started with 7% - 8.1% (31/36)

Currently 7th Grade Civil Servant is 6th in its time slot, Jeon Woo-Chi is 7th and The great Seer is 16th.

Saturday & Sunday Dramas (8-8:40pm):
#1 My Daughter Seo-Young: 42.4% - 47.4% (KBS) - started with 19.3% - 23.3% (38/50) 1st
#2 My Love, Madame Butterfly: 11.1% - 14.2% (SBS) - stated with 9% - 10.6% (27/50) 11th
#3 Rascal Sons: 8.8% (MBC) - started with 7.7% - 9.4% (27/50) 19th

Saturday & Sunday Dramas (9:40-10pm):
#1 Cheongdamdong Alice: 14.8% - 18.6% (SBS) - started with 8.6% - 10% (16/16) 4th
#2 Hundred Year Inheritance: 13.9% - 17.6% (MBC) - started with 13.8% - 16.6% (6/50) 6th
#3 The King's Dream: 10.8% - 12.2% (KBS) - started with 12.2% - 12.9% (30/80) 12th

In terms of top dramas I would say My Daughter Seo-Young tops everything else by FAR, then its Horse Doctor then Cheongdamdong Alice and School 2013 are fairly tied. Certainly dramas that attract an older audience do much better than School 2013 which is geared mostly towards students/young people as a larger portion of the population are older than 30.

The worst performer, on this list of course, is The Great Seer. I did hear that it was supposed to be 50 episodes like many historical dramas but was shortened due to low ratings but I have no idea if that is true.

That 40%+ drama, My Daughter Seo-Young, is the one being followed up by the drama singer IU is said to be starring in, it has some mighty big shoes to fill. Cheongdamdong Alice replaced Five Fingers, which was supposed to star idol group T-ara's Eunjung, but it has now been rumoured that Eunjung is being considered for a role in the Incarnation of Money which is supposed to take over after Cheongdamdong Alice ends.

School 2013 is going to be followed up Ad Genius Lee Tae-Baekm, the name sort of reminds me of Baking King Kim Tak Gu which also ran on KBS. If the drama will be as successful is unsure but with Han Chae Young (Boys Over Flowers, A Man Called God, Changing Partners) on the cast, at least a few men will tune in for sure.

* There is a range in ratings as different rating services have different outcomes and there is a separation between Seoul and Nationwide and therefore ranks as well as rating vary somewhat. Ratings/rankings are for most recent episodes available.
** Most dramas air both days so Monday & Tuesday dramas run 2 episodes per week, one on Monday and one on Tuesday and so forth.
*** Time in brackets are start times of the dramas not airing time, so 8-8:40 pm means the dramas start at times between 8 and 8:40pm not that they run for 40 minutes.
**** no ratings available for Monday - Friday or cable dramas.

GAON Top 200 Digital Ranking Breakdown

What was the trend in 2012? Well far from critics who say idols are out, over a third of the songs on the GAON Top 200 came from idols, 35.5 songs from female idols, including half the Top 10 and 34 from male idols, as well as 4 from idol bands. There were 24 female idols who charted on the GAON Top 100, most with one or two songs while the 16 male idols have BIGBANG to thank for the high number as the group charted 10 times and the leader G-Dragon, a further 4 times. It seems many girl groups opted for solo and subunit activities rather than multiple comebacks this year.

There does seem to be some validity to concerns over television shows taking a big bite out of the music market as 22 OSTs and about 15 music show/comedian songs charted or about a fifth of the chart.

Non-idol male artists seem to do very well digitally as both non-idol male solos and groups, who often sing ballad type songs and hip hop artists took up 30 and 20 spots on the chart for a quarter of the overall chart. They tend to chart more songs on average than female and male idols (if you take the anomaly of BIGBANG out of the equation).

Female non-idols had the weakest showing, perhaps because of how they were sectioned off (no, I don't think being a soloist automatically takes you out of the idol realm), but there doesn't seem to be too many non-idol female artists active/charting. While Lyn, Baek Ji Young, Zia and the 4 rookies female non-idols who debuted are doing well, groups like Miss $ and Glime, one of the few female artists working in the hip hop/R&B genre along with E.via, don't seem to be making much of an impact. In fact there don't seem to be any female hip hop groups/artists like Dynamic Duo, Epik High or Verbal Jint that are successful.

Take a look at the breakdown below. "Other" includes TV show songs (like Superstar K 4), comedian songs (like Sagging Snail) and company collaborations (like Jelly Christmas), as well as a few unknowns. The artist with the most songs charting was Busker Busker with an amazing 14!

*with soloists its hard sometimes to place idol and non-idol, G.NA & Ailee do the same types of music, dances and promotions as idol groups so I see them as solo idols, same with IU. I kinda think Lee Hi & Juniel could go into that category too but I'm not sure yet...

Price of Digital Music Content in Korea vs World

As you can see here, price per download in Korea is compared to other countries. Most of the other services come from iTunes with the exception of Japan. The price for a download in England, America, France, Canada, Australia and Japan via iTunes is converted into won. The lowest range for 1 downloads is in Australia with the equivalent of  1,111 won and the highest being 2,445 in Japan. Mora and Yahoo Japan charge even higher prices, the equivalent of between 2,034 and 2,713 won per download. Compare this to the 600 won charged in Korea, that is the price without any packages or subscription services. It is simple to see that the prices in Korea are generally half of other countries. if you take into account packages, prices can be as low as 10% of what is charged in other countries.

This chart compares streaming services. These are websites that allow you to stream music as much as you want for, usually, a monthly fee. Spotify in Europe charges the equivalent of 8,824 won per month, Rdio in North America charges 5,573 won while Yahoo Sound Station in Japan charges the equivalent of 5,085 won. This is compared to the 3,300 won that was charged in Korea.

Recently both download and streaming prices have risen but not by very much. Still early signs are that these increases are having a small effect on digital revenue. Melon, the largest online music retailer in South Korea, is currently selling streaming services on sale for between 3,430 won and 4,900 won. Regular price would be 6,000 won. Regular price for new download packages would be between 110 won and 300 won per download but Melon's current sales has them for between 90 won and 230 won per download, depending of which package you buy.

* a few notes:
- in albums anything labeled (Korean) simply means it was a Korean release that was later sold in Japan and not whether it was a Japan edition or not.
- DVD and BluRay numbers have been combined for overall totals, these are from unofficial numbers since I couldn't find Oricon's official DVD/BluRay list yet.
- Over 50 DVDs, 90 singles and 100 albums have charted on Oricon's chart from Korean artists this year a rise from last year.
- Not many female rookies this year, in fact the runner up, Orange Caramel had 14,682 in sales, just 200 more than the Wonder Girls
- Most Improved is chosen by subtracting last year's sales from this year's. Kim Hyun Joong's sales grew by 286,863 units, Big Bang by 256,703
- Rising stars are chosen by a slow and steady increase in sales, someone I think might become big sellers in the future (more of an opinion this one)

Looking forward to 2013!

2012 GAON Charts & Infographics

2012 Infographics from GAON

DAs for some popular songs. Notice the similar trend. Also notice that songs with only a few days their first week usually have a higher 2nd week after which it follows the same trend.

This chart has more songs note the anomaly in Twinkle's 5th week and 2 significant points of boosts, lasting a few weeks each, for Gangnam Style likely due to overseas exposure and news coverage.

Gender and ages of fans of various songs. T-ara and Wondergirls gettin' that males in their 50s demographic!

This graphs shows percentage of monthly #1's per company so who had the #1 song by DAs monthly out of the 12 months of 2012. YG Entertainment seems to be the only company with more than 1, taking in a total of 5.

Here is a breakdown:

 January: T-ara (CCM)
#2 by approx. 30 million DAs: Dynamic Duo (Amoeba Culture)

 February: BIGBANG (YG)
#2 by approx. 13 million DAs: Lyn (Good)

 March: BIGBANG(YG)
#2 by approx. 4.5 million DAs: 2AM (JYP)

 April: Busker Busker (Indie)
#2 by approx. 35 million DAs: Sistar (Starship)

 May: SNSD-TTS (SM)
#2 by approx. 100,000 DAs: IU (LOEN)

 June: Wondergirls (JYP)
#2 by approx. 500,000 (half a million) DAs: BIGBANG (YG)

 July: 2NE1 (YG)
#2 by approx. 14 million DAs T-ara (CCM)

August: Psy (YG)
#2 by approx. 53 million DAs: Boa (SM)

September: Seo In Guk & Jung Eunji (Jellyfish & CUBE)
#2 by approx. 1 million DAs: G-Dragon (YG)

 October: Gain (LOEN)
#2 by approx. 2 millions DAs: Epik High (YG)

 November: Lee Hi (YG)
#2 by approx. 19 million DAs: Geeks (LOEN)

 December: Lee Seung Gi (Hook)
#2 by approx. 23 million DAs: Yang Yeoseob (Cube)

Three months YG artists were #2 by fewer than 3 million DAs. Other than YG artists as well as 2AM and IU's #2 rankings all other #2 ranking songs were over 10 million DAs away from the #1 ranking song. Otherwise if we were to use a points system with a #1 song getting 3 points, a #2 song getting 2 points and a #3 song getting 1 points. It would look something like this:

YG: 22
Loen: 7
CCM: 7
SM: 6
JYP: 5
Starship: 4
Indie: 4
Cube: 3.5
Hook: 3
Jellyfish: 2.5
Ameoba Culture: 2
Good: 2
Nega: 1
YMC: 1
WS: 1
F&C: 1

There is certainly a trend here but it is important to note that this is impacted by when in the month songs were released. Sistar for example has 2 songs in the Top 10 yearly (or it is almost certain they do but technically yearly GAON charts have not been released) despite never topping a monthly chart.

This shows who topped monthly charts. 4 different girl groups (T-ara, 2NE1, SNSD-TTS, Wondergirls) topped the monthly charts as did 2 female solos (Gain, Lee Hi). Only one male idol group (BIGBANG) and 2 male solos (Psy, Lee Seung Gi) topped the monthly charts. 1 band and 1 duet topped the monthly charts. You will notice this adds up to 11 as BIGBANG topped the charts twice, the only artists to do so this year.

Hope this was helpful.
